This is another busy summer for me. Once more, I am having to focus my energy elsewhere but it's important that I do. I am beginning to feel a bit depressed not feeling like I have time to create, so instead of making a big production, I plan on spending 1 to 2 hours a day painting invented landscapes. This will allow me to be creative, do something for myself, then get back to the books. Let's see where this goes.

Acrylic Paint on Masonite Board

60 x 60 inches (5 x5 feet)

I don't normally do works on commission. The pressure is too much. I get concerned that the folks asking me for a specific painting won't be too pleased. After all, we all have our own style and technique. Luckily, the person asking was happy with this one!

I'm not sure why I love adding these rounded bumps onto my work. Some where in Utah or Nevada, or maybe both you can find petroglyphs of abstract grids of dots left behind from the ancient Americans, so I like to believe that I am a reincarnation of a fellow who left behind such symbols.

AMERICA, WE HAVE a PROBLEM

This collage is to represent the American people protesting against police brutality. America, we have a problem. Good cop or bad cop, we need to recognize that racism remains pervasive today; the evidence is clear, as the American people are being maimed and murdered by those with an abundance of force but a dearth of brotherly love. I thought we were a country that despised Nazis? We need a leader who values humanity rather than encourages divisive behavior.

On November 3rd, 2020, I was asked to be interviewed for this piece by Dutch culture magazine, VPRO Mondo. The article Four Artists About America features this collage along with three other artists.

These are retirement gifts for two of our school's teachers who have retired this year. I stayed up until 3:00 AM making them. I was a little grouchy the next day. I was going to buy candles, but then decided on making my own gifts believing it wouldn't take that long. During the process, I asked myself I why I didn't just buy candles? I got up the next morning to finish the bunnies. The rest of the day was spent racing around town to find frames, wrap the gifts, and deliver the goods to the correct location. All speeding down the highway to get to Zoom classroom meetings. I think it was all worth it.

A gift for Pete Leon who wonderfully survived cancer.

My favorite part is the Converse shoes, specifically the detail of the stitching. I would love to illustrate shoes for company ads. I think Warhol started out doing that? I can’ t remember. But I do think one of his first pro gigs was illustrating for a shoe ad. I’ll have to research.

BELLISSIMO

Photo Transfer and Acrylic on Canvas

This was accepted for an exhibition in 2008. I had been talking to a guy who was a nursing student at the time. My talks with him inspired me to take a photo of him operating a syringe. It might have also been an excuse to see him.

I dropped off this piece at Allied Arts in Downtown OKC before I left for Korea. I don’t even remember the title of the event. I was too lazy to go back and retrieve it. Those days, the economy was crap and I didn’t know what to do with my life. I wonder what happened to this thing.

This was made as a gift for my friend Brian Mayernick. I didn't even bother to document it well. After nearly seven years of giving up on art, due to a bit of depression and feelings of failure, these drawings of owls and other birds in my sketchbook brought me back into my craft. It's one of my favorites! It reminds me of those great gatherings those summer nights in Weatherford, OK.
